Is Your No Smoking Policy Wide Enough?

Electronic cigarettes (which are some times called E-Cigs or vapour cigarettes) are becoming increasingly popular, as they provide smokers with the nicotine hit without any of the harmful effects.

The UK smoking ban does not currently restrict the use of electronic cigarettes in public places.

This is yet to be tested at court however what this effectively means is that individuals would appear to have the freedom to “smoke” them legally indoors, including in your work place and work vehicles.

The question employers have to ask them selves is; do you really want staff puffing away on an E-cigarette at their desks or in front of clients?

Not only may this portray a poor business image and upset your non smoking members of staff but it is worth bearing in mind that they have an element in them which heats up to produce steam and therefore could prove a potential ignition source for fires.

With all of this in mind it is perfectly acceptable for you to adapt your current no smoking policy to include the ban of E-cigarettes within the work place and in work vehicles.
