HSE Annual Health & Safety Statistics 2012/13

The following is taken from the 2012/13 Annual Statistics Report for Great Britain, released by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

These statistics show an 11 per cent drop in major injuries compared to 2011/12. While these numbers demonstrate that health and safety in the workplace is improving, many of the injuries and fatalities that occurred could have been prevented through simple safety measures. As you read through these numbers, consider what you can do to improve health and safety in your workplace.

  • 1.1million people who worked last year suffered from an illness they believe was caused or made worse by their current or past work
  • Workplace injuries & ill health cost an estimated £13.8billion in 2010/11
  • 148 workers were killed at work.
  • 646,000 self-reported injuries at work
  • 22.7million working days lost due to ill health and 5.2million lost due to workplace injury
  • 78,222 injuries to employees reported under RIDDOR
  • 706 cases were prosecuted by the HSE, Procurator Fiscal and local authorities in Great Britain
  • 13,503 enforcement notices were issued by all enforcing authorities
